What's this all about then?
Since September 2001 Deep Blue Sound has provided Sound Engineering courses, Music Technology courses and Music Production courses. Recent additions include a new Live Sound course and a new Music for Film & Television degree. These courses are based at our recording studios on the Barbican, in the centre of Plymouth. Whatever your musical or technical interest you will have the facilities and the tutors to support you in your endeavours.
Sounds interesting, but I haven't ever touched this sort of gear before, let alone been in a studio.
No matter. Whether you are an absolute beginner or a more advanced user of music technology we have the course that will help you to progress. The courses are for everyone - from musicians to non-musicians, DJ's to thrash metal die-hards!
Yeah, but I bet I never get to touch the gear myself.
On the contrary, as a student at Deep Blue Sound your time will be split between several state of the art facilities.
Three different IT suites where you will work on your own sound-station. Two PC based and one brand new suite of IMac G5's.
A Pod studio suite where each students will work alone with a basic 24 track digital and analogue recording studio.
A fully equipped suite of studios where you will work in a group no larger than 4 at any one time.
As such the tutors can guide you through the processes involved in making music and you get plenty of hands-on experience with the gear.
Yeah, but I bet the studios are fusty holes and the computers are outdated.
Our studios are purpose-built and contain the very latest in digital and analogue gear. You will learn to use digital and analogue mixing desks (we currently have two large Neve 51 Series desks, a 96 channel Tascam M5000, four 32:8 Mackies, 2 HD Pro Tools setups, 2 Yamaha 02r's etc. etc.), FX, samplers (E-mu, Akai and software based), digital multitrack recorders, microphones etc... These studios are housed in a professional, clean and well-maintained environment.
Our IT suites contain top-dollar machines each housing the very latest music software available (Pro Tools LE, Logic, Cubase SX, Nuendo, Reason, Wavelab etc.....).
OK - I suppose these courses cost a fortune right?
Due to a partnership deal between Deep Blue Sound, Plymouth College of FE, Plymouth College of Art & Design and the University of Plymouth, the courses are hugely subsidised.
For the unwaged there will be a small fee that we hope will show your commitment to the course. For the waged the courses are still very reasonably priced and we have an easy payment plan to help you spread the costs out over the year if necessary. Under 19's receive the course completely free of charge.
Do I get any qualification out of these courses?
Since September 2003 we have been running a Diploma in Creative Music Technology and Sound Engineering and a Foundation Degree in Sound & Music Technology.
The Diploma is a 2 year modular course which incorporates a BTEC Diploma in Music Technology and the City & Guilds 1820 Diploma in Sound Engineering.
The Foundation Degree is a 2 year course which can be converted to a full BA Hons with a 3rd year at Plymouth University or another University of your choice
We now also run a Diploma in Music for Media and from September 2006 will be running a Foundation Degree in Music for Film & Media
Are these courses run in the daytime or in the evening?
Both. There will be a course running at a time suitable for your own situation - daytime, evening or at the weekend.
Sounds like you are on a bit of a mission?
We are! It is our mission to provide a first-rate educational experience in a top class, professional recording studio complex competing with the best in the country. Plymouth and the South West deserves nothing less.
OK - I'm sure I'll think of a million more questions!
No problem. Don't hesitate to get in touch regarding any further queries you may have or to apply for a place on one of the courses.
Our friendly and helpful staff are here from 9 to 5 Monday to Friday to take your call. Alternatively click on the More Info link and email us with your specific questions.
