This module deals with the design and specifications of sound systems for a range of performance applications. It gives grounding in the theory and practice of producing sound system designs to suit various clients.

This unit consolidates a basic knowledge of physics of sound and applies this to musical systems, musical instruments and environments where music is performed, recorded and configured.

Critical Music Listening
This unit aims to develop the learners hearing acuity, to develop the engineers ‘golden ears’, in order to function successfully as a live engineer. It concentrates on solving sonic problems in environments and between instruments and on the ability to balance, correct and combine elements in a performance or production.

Audio Recording
This unit aims to develop an understanding of the processes and techniques of audio recording in relation to the live context, focussing on the peculiarities as compared to studio recording.

Project Realisation
In this unit learners will implement the skills necessary for the production of a professional product within the live sound field such as running the sound for a live gig. Learners will define roles, plan the project, fulfil the project and then evaluate individuals and the group.

Music Business and the Entrepreneur
This unit looks at music business organisations that are relevant to the live sound industry, and recognises the skills of the entrepreneur in the field. It also looks at the importance of business planning and self-employment.

Music, Health and the Law
This unit looks at the health and legal implications of working in the live sound music industry, paying special attention to the application of safe working practices, with regard to use of electricity, loudness and risk assessments.

Contextual Studies
Here we look at how live sound has developed over the years, especially across genres. It also looks at the special requirements of the live engineer in relation to specific genres, mediums and locations. The work of key individuals in the development of the art of live sound throughout history is also analysed.
